President Xi Jinping and Laotian President Bounnhang Vorachith jointly attended a foundation-laying ceremony on Nov 14, to mark the start of work on a hospital expansion project in Vientiane, Laos, involving money and medical equipment from China.

China IPPR International Engineering Co, an affiliate of Sinomach, is responsible for the design and management of the project to upgrade Mahosot Hospital, which was the first hospital in Laos, built in 1910.

With a total cost of 700 million yuan ($105 million), the renovated hospital will be the largest hospital construction project among all China's overseas assistance projects so far.

Upon completion, which is scheduled for 2021, it will consist of eight floors with 600 beds, covering a total floorage of 54,800 square meters.

In addition to building a new structure, China will also donate new medical equipment to the hospital and turn it into a key medical education base in Laos.
